Hello Richard (and everyone) My microscope is a Veho VMS-004. It goes to 400x magnification, and I have had decent images with it, but without everything being held steady it isn't really feasible to do any sensible analysis of shapes. It comes with a snap-on plastic semi-ring to hold the body and that really needs to be a proper clamp. I'm thinking now about making a ring to hold the body and fit that to a photographic ball/socket head which would then readily attach to the focusing rails.
Hmmm, time to do a little head scratching. I'll update later when my mental gears have whirred for a bit.
regards
Angus

Well, you did a fine job with that 400X scope. The details are obviously much more clear and with nice and soft contrasts compared to my first 200X. I'll keep on trying to get some details too, first I have to find the extra magnifying glass the children played with yesterday... Greetings!

I also have that USB microscope. Here are some of my shots: Nagaoka SP1-2: A B&O SP2 that has lost the diamond:

Beautiful pictures, indeed, but imho of very little use to ascertain the state of wear. Unless part of the tip has disappeared, a picture from the front (or rear) does not tell a lot. Wear would occur on the side faces of the stylus tip, visible as flat spots, which you simply could not see in a front view. If you ha a chance of taking a picture from the side, use an LED flashlight from as high an angle as possible - you may not get a brilliant picture of your diamond, but you might get an elliptical reflection in case of a worn stylus.

Well, after much fiddling around with the standard holder for the Veho, I've managed to achieve the following views of my recently acquired AT130E, fresh from the ultrasonic cleaner: I have also continued the search for easy ways to improve the stability and maneouverability of the microscope, and have found the following item: http://shop.conrad-uk.com/components/kits-and-modules/photographic-and-displays/mini-microscopic-camera-accessories/191348.htmlAs Wer has said, we really need to be able to see the formation if any of flats on the sides of the stylus, and I'm thinking that the first step in this is to get a stable hands-free set-up so that we can manipulate a light source. Still whirring..... regards Angus

Nice pics! The sharpness goes so fast that only the front OR the back of the needle is sharp and than it's hard to see some details... I know what you mean..., the edges on the utmost tip end are important, the rest of the tip doesn't go into the groove. I have some pictures with the rim of the tip visible, this one gives a clue:

I think that your photos are getting pretty good, Hans.
It is in the front or rear views that we can see deviation from the normal profile with the best clarity. It's especially beneficial to see this as a shadowgraph. With just the right lighting from the sides, we may be able to see flats, but in my experience, it's easier to see them end-on in a shadow view.
My own pictures are on a computer that's going to be apart for some time, so I can't show them.
Your MA needle reminds me of a parabolic shape; I can't quite make this out. Is it supposed to be an elliptical or one of their advanced shapes?

That is the package of the needle: this is another photo with the compact...: I'm not sure about the shape of the MA-530 needle, from the side it somewhat looks like an elliptical, on the lower picture it looks a little edgy, but I guess it's roundish on the right side and flatter on the left, so that's elliptical... Every angle shows another needle For details I'm sure in need of one of those Olympus 1000X. Going to watch the markets
