I did put stuffing in the ports as a test. Rather much the sound was worse. Most of the detail went away, actually.

After some tests and a lot of thinking, I have finally decided on the finishing. Yesterday I put on a first coat of white oil stain:



And then today after a very light sanding another layer of white oil stain:

I'm not a stuffing fan either.  In all cases where I've tried it I found I preferred the sound without - speakers are 'livelier' without stuffing.
