hello all
found i was having a little distortion at the last track or so on my gl 78 angry
so after checking found over hang was out,  just a touch, ropies_ohthedrama
i did it this way.
first i made this,

made of paper (less chance of damaging stylus than card or plastic) sad
then measure middle of spindle to tip of stylus   simple

18 mm is standard lenco stylus overhang, 211 mounting distance +18mm overhang= 229mm effective lengh grin
other arms/ turntables will differ so please check  police

hope ive got this right im sure somebody will correct me if not  wink

Hi Alan, now that your overhang is correct (if you judged the middle of the spindle well), you should have a look at the cartridge angle.
Suggest you print out a protractor to do this:
 http://www.conradhoffman.com/TemplateGen.zip
is one of the better ones which also lets you adjust X- and Y-axes to compensate for printer inaccuracies.

Thanks werner,
Camera angle makes it look out  but it's spot on,  grin
Seems to have sorted distortion out,
But I will download protractor and check again

Hi Alan,
Just a thought, if you reduce the thickness of your guage by half a spindle diameter (1/8" = 3.175mm) then you can measure from the 'front' face of the spindle and reduce the error in estimating the spindle's centre.

Cheers,
Steve.

.....half a spindle diameter (1/8" = 3.175mm)

Hmmmm... if my memory is not completely off, the spindle diameter is 7.2 mm. At least that's what I use on my bearings.
Went a-looking and a-measuring. Tesa caliper says 7.18 mm
1/4" would give a nice wah-wah on most records...

Greetings, Hansrudolf

Sorry folks, I thought that the spindle dia was 1/4" (~6.3mm)!!! embarrassed embarrassed

I have to admit to never having measured one, it's a figure that I think I've known all my life and it's been wrong all this time.  laugh Or maybe i'm misremembering.... are those big fat adaptors for 45s 1 1/4"?

Anyway, Alan, reduce the thickness by 3.6mm!!!! Quick before anyone finds out!!!!

Cheers,
Steve.
