Please excuse me if this has been covered already.  I have tried to look  on this forum and others but my search skills are not very good.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the differences between the Pioneer PL-6 and PL7?

From pictures and comments posted here I see they have different tonearms.

Are the platters different?  The PL-6 has a small platter.  Does the PL-7 have a full sized platter?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!

Check this thread.

Both have small platter and identical tonearms as I see them. The 6A has round synchronous motor, 7E rectangular induction type. Don't know about motor type on 6 (without any suffix). Shall have to check. I think I have one somewhere.

The PL7 (no suffix) has a full sized platter.

Yes. I was mislead by the gap seen between the speed selector knob and platter edge in Mike Is thread. The thread you linked is inside the one I linked and also some other ones. The PL 6 may have a smaller chassis compared to the A version. It has the rectangular induction motor, not the round synchronous type.

Thanks to all!
This is great information.  Exactly what I need.

FWIW, I have a PL-6 (no suffix) and was thinking of buying a PL-7.

I will try to attach some pics of my PL-6.

Further information

PL6 chassis is 302x379 mm spindle to pivot 197mm

PL7 chassis 307x406 mm spindle to pivot 205 mm

PL 7 dimensions have been taken from a PL11 that I have. 11 is with 30cm platter.

A question for all:

Which of the Pioneer idlers do you think is the best?

hi, the PL-6a has a stamped steel chassis , the PL-7E has a cast aluminium chassis.
i have had both and the 7E is the clear winner and if in good condition it will compare to Garrard 301, I too have a number of 301s to compare with.

Thanks for your reply, eljorge, especially since you have owned both the PL-6 and 7.

When I found out the 7e had a full sized, heavier platter and a better motor, I figured it was probably better.  Thanks for confirming that.
