Hi LH,

Here is my EAR 834P Phono Clone.

It all began in 2018 when I started reading through all the threads. I decided to order the assembled Xouling boards as I did not think I was up to soldering them. I lost the sight in my left eye from a stroke in 2013 which has really affected my up-close sight due to the blurriness from the left.

I then researched which transformer to buy and came across Primary Windings in the UK and contacted them.
I sent them links in relation to the EAR Clone and they designed and built the transformer

PWHT05 250V @80MA 6.3V @ 2A PRE-AMP RIAA VALVE TRANSFORMER

http://primarywindings.com/product/pwht05-200v-80ma-6-3v-2a-pre-amp-riaa-valve-transformer/

Description from website
This transformer was inspired by the EAR 834P RIAA pre-amplifier, but may be used in many other designs.

Being a pre-amp the spec on this transformer is very conservative. It is designed with very low flux density, and high quality M6 laminations, meaning the magnetising current is tiny, and the stray flux is very small.
This would normally be enough for a pre-amplifier transformer, but we went further, and added a bright copper flux band, to reduce any stray flux down to almost nothing.
The fact that the magnetising current is so small ensures the mag current waveform is still quite sinusoidal meaning less harmonics to be generated. This is much better than a typical toroidal transformer, where the mag current is high, and is very distorted, generating lots of harmonics.
The copper band makes the transformer look great.
Primary voltage:  220, 230, 240 and 250V.
Secondary: 250V @ 80mA. 6.3V @ 2A Centre tapped.
All high voltage windings use grade 2 enamelled wire for safety and longevity
The heater winding is doubly insulated from the HT winding, and is designed to give long life.

John also designed and built a suitable choke.

Description
A superb quality DC choke for any valve project.

Hand made in the United Kingdom
Constructed using high grade grain orientated M6 0.35mm lamination.
Double insulated.
Flash tested at 2.5KV,
Weight 480g.
 DC resistance 500 Ohms]

I then sat on the project for a while until I came across Rexton’s thread on his clone built by Firebottle. I messaged Alan aka Firebottle to see if he would be willing to build mine for me and I sent my parts to him not long after Christmas.

It took a while to decide on the case and eventually Alan found one for me that I liked.

Alan built it with two MM inputs and the option for loading for different cartridges as well as some of his mods

Alan was a pleasure to deal with and very patient with me and my questions.

Once I received the completed amp back I had to decide on which 12AX7  valves to fit. From the start I decided to go with new production valves as I cannot afford expensive NOS valves at this stage and season of life.  After reading some forums I decided to go with JJ ECC803S Matched Valves from Karltone. You can see that the specs are all identical.

I have installed the valves but now need to connect it to my system which will probably have to wait till next week when the kids are back at school after half term.

I have had to learn to be patient in life especially after a stroke as fatigue is a big issue, but I am getting there. I will be connecting the pre to my recently acquired WD 88VA KT88 XL valve amp.

Funds are very low now so I will have to start selling some of my HiFi to build them back up again.

Once I have connected everything up and listens for a while I will try and write something up.
A big thanks to Spaceistheplace for introducing and helping so many on this forum with this project.

Later in the year I hope to be able to put together my CNC MM preamp supplied and very kindly built by Sachu
for me and compare it with the EAR 834P (Firebottle) Clone

Thanks for watching

Looking good. I got my EAR back from Alan today as well, he added cartridge loading onto mine which is something which I should have done ages ago!  wink I'm sure you'll be doing some tube rolling when funds permit. I've got Mullard CV4004's sitting in mine but I did get extremely lucky and managed to find 8 when prices were very very cheap. I hope you enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Thanks Alan,

I remember reading a very long piece on audiokarma that someone wrote about the importance of loading which is why I went for that option.

Enjoy yours

Hi Keith,
Thanks for the encouragement and interest, I think it owes me around £500 all in. It would have been cheaper to have bought a ready assembled complete EAR 834 from Douk Audio on eBay for around £200 and have Alan (Firebottle) mod it as it would have everything in place and just need the mods with some better components.

I will put something together with some links later today hopefully which may help some others. It also depends on how much DIY people want to do or are able to do.

I know there are many on the forum capable of such projects.

As requested this should give you and idea of cost of this build.. It may depend on how long the links last  (prices as of 22-02-19)

Xouling Assembled EAR 834P MM Phono Clone Boards approx £78 including postage to UK depending on exchange rate

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1set-Stereo-tube-amplifier-MM-RIAA-834-ear-phono-12ax7-PCB-assembled-kits/192471062589

Alan aka Firebottle made some mods to the boards and replaced some of the caps with higher spec in critical places

Power Transformer from Primary Windings

http://primarywindings.com/product/pwht05-200v-80ma-6-3v-2a-pre-amp-riaa-valve-transformer/

PWHT05 250V @80MA 6.3V @ 2A PRE-AMP RIAA VALVE TRANSFORMER £38.00 + VAT + postage

This is it installed along with the choke

The Choke was also supplied by Primary Windings

http://primarywindings.com/product/20-henry-50ma-dc-choke/

20 HENRY50MA DC CHOKE  £16.00 + VAT

Case for project on eBay £42 + £30 postage = £72
WA127 Full Aluminum preamp Enclosure amplifier case tube chassis 355*115*315mm

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WA127-Full-Aluminum-preamp-Enclosure-amplifier-case-tube-chassis-355-115-315mm/273080461187?hash=item3f94dd2783:g:34wAAOSw0ZJajstR

An alternative case is this one on Ali Express and it is cheaper around £60 with postage
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/case-320-80-266mm-A3208A-Iron-body-Aluminum-panels-amplifier-chassis-Integrated-Amplifier-Pre-amplifier-AMP/32792397737.html?spm=2114.search0604.3.184.5d574406KIsS44&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_2_10065_10068_319_317_10548_10696_10192_453_10084_454_10083_10618_431_10307_10821_10301_537_536_10059_10884_10887_100031_321_322_10103,searchweb201603_2,ppcSwitch_0&algo_expid=91414e70-6c12-4bab-853e-7de6adb84223-32&algo_pvid=91414e70-6c12-4bab-853e-7de6adb84223

Then there was the work done by Alan aka Firebottle which was very reasonable and you can contact him for a quote or info. He can make it pretty much bespoke and as mentioned I asked for two TT inputs and ability for cartridge capacitance loading which I can do by connecting phono plugs at the back. I think it is best to contact Alan for an idea of cost a it really depends on what you want to do. The case can be the most expensive item out of all the parts and you can spend a lot of money on one if you really want to. The one I bought seems to be really well made.

This gives some of the idea of what he had to do for me using the Xouling assembled boards

To be frank the feedback components that were fitted to the clone board were not great.
They are ceramic capacitors (not good) and poor tolerance, one of the most important things is to have the channels matched, even if the RIAA curve is not absolutely correct. Even the resistors weren't well matched, plus I have corrected the RIAA curve.
The first and second stages have been modified to make them more linear, plus coupling capacitors have been replaced with polypropylene caps, the fitted ones were polyester, again not good.

The final cost for me was the valves and a mentioned I went for JJ ECC803s matched trio from Karltone which cost me around £50 including postage

https://www.karltone.co.uk/jj-ecc803s-long-plate-ecc83-22-p.asp

Again you can spend a lot of money on valves if you go down the NOS route with Mullards etc

As I mentioned in my thread a cheaper way to do it would be to by a fully assembled preamp in  case with everything for around £200 and have it sent to Alan directly for him to upgrade and mod. However it may be worth listening to the standard one purchased, get used to it and then end it to Alan and that way you would be able to tell the difference the upgrades and mods have made for you.

This one is from Zero Zone on ebay and has green boards

This one has the douk board I think which is black and gold
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Finished-MM-RIAA-Turntables-Ear834-Tube-Phono-Amplifier-12AX7-O-trannsformer/113182083356?hash=item1a5a2d891c:g:50gAAOSwVaVZwSNn:rk:9:pf:0

Hope this is of interest or helps someone

Hi Lee,
many thanks for the detailed write up and pictures, best wishes for your continued recovery.
Thanks very much joolz,  it’s 5 1/2 years since the event and there is always an incremental process year by year. I am very fortunate in many ways and grateful to be alive.
Music can make such a difference in our lives and this is such a great hobby and the LH forum is one of the best out there.

Hi There,
I just spotted something really interesting with the above enclosure.... namely the 'Loading' pot... can you explain if this is a selectable cart loading (resistance/capacitance) dial?

well done on your build by the way, It sounds like you've been through the mill.

The loading control is a single switch that switches in additional capacitance loading provided by individual loading plugs of various capacitance.

The plugs are connected into additional loading sockets on the rear, the loading switch switches these in or out via relays so the effect of the additional capacitive loading can be heard.

Hi, very interesting, I've purchased the same riaa from primary Windings for another project and I'm wondering if you have a schematic for the power supply you built? Looks interesting. John
