Hello Chris,

Thanks for that info.
I haven't moved on this as yet as some other stuff has distracted my attention.

Well, I caved in & bought an MP-500 stylus from EMJ Music for my MP-30. I figured they aren’t going to get any cheaper, & their price was good compared to other sellers. Worked out to be the equivalent of £185 for me.

Sooooo... how do you like it?      I imagine the Nag 500 to be the updated version of the Stanton 681EEE-Sll

Hello all,

I finally picked this up again a couple of weeks ago. My interest was in hearing an advanced stylus design again and it struck me that the easiest way to do this was re-fit my Goldring 1000 series and give that a go. As both the 1042 styli I have are well used I ordered a new 1022gx stylus. A bit cheaper than the 1042 but still a posh, Vital polyhedron shape so should tell me want I wanted to know. The new stylus now has 20-25 hours on it and has improved since first fitting. I have to say I am very impressed by the improvement in detail, clarity and smoothness i'm hearing. I think my system must have improved more than I realised in the 5 years since I fitted the Nagaoka as I don't remember the difference being this great. The only thing I am missing is the lovely inviting midrange of the Nagaoka but the improvements elsewhere more than make up for it. It is also noticeably better on loud, end of side tracks. Ones that sounded a bit compressed and muddled with the Nagaoka sound like the rest of the side with the Vital stylus.

The conclusion is that I will not be going back to the MP200 with its original elliptical tip. The choice is whether to stay with the Goldring or order an MP500 stylus from Japan. I am not one to chop and change so I will stick with the Goldring for a while and see if I really do miss the presentation/tone of the Nagaoka.

Chris, I presume that you have now tried the 500 stylus. What do you think?

Phil.

I personally think the Goldring body is a bit better (less coloured, more detailed/transparent) than the Nagaoka. I’d stick with it if it sounds good.
