Technics SP10 Club (SP15, SP20, SP25, BBC Sp’s and SP10R’s also welcome)Looks like we have quite a few members here owning Technics SP10’s, so how about a thread for an owners club: SP10’s Mk1, 2 and 3’s? SP15, SP20, SP25, BBC Sp’s and SP10R’s also welcome. Feel free to: - post pictures - add comments to any experiments (plinths, matts etc) - any info that may be of interest to others (or links) What: a Technics Direct Drive turntable club on a Lenco site

Great idea, Keith! What I like about Lenco Heaven is that it's very inclusive and the members here are generally open-minded. Actually, I think many of the members don't use a Lenco themselves. Technics SP series are also classic turntables, and keeping them alive and using them is (in my opinion) very much in the spirit of Lenco Heaven...

This is the SP10 MKII Model I have set up in my system. There is a rebuilt Ortofon K'b, that has a Ogura Beryllium Cantilever and a Ogura Diamond, this cartridge is attached to a PMAT-1010 Tonearm to give it its full chance to sing its little heart out. The Phosphor Bronze Platter is a Concept Idea awaiting to be proven for usage, it is substantially heavy as a platter, one does not want to nip their fingertips when handling. The matching Technics Lamp Stand is as rare as Rocking Horse No 2's. All this from taking up a invite to a visit to Keith's Old Home, and meeting the Die Hard UK Department of LH as well as Angus Phonomac.

If you're starting a club Keith, shouldn't you show your example? Interesting Japanese site which shows restoration of various SP turntables: https://sp-10.jp/(the translations aren't that great, but useful high quality photos)

Funny enough, since most of us might be using more than one record player, or have some standing around... I just made a little bit of graphite with a router into a platter that wanders around on my different tables. Here is my SP 10 MkII from England, had to be repaired a bit and has been running perfectly ever since. The optical condition is...well, used. The aluminium plinth is original from a professional user and is equipped with an external speed control. The FR 24 MkII arm was installed by me with a converted Denon 103, on a piece of ebony as base. There is also a graphite and a brass base. It is the most neutral drive I know. No airs and graces, you can hear what you put on it. Always good, sometimes fantastic. Strictly speaking the last word if you just want to spin your records. Arndt

But I wonder why they are replacing all ceramic and film caps. They don't really have an expiration date, unlike the electrolytics...

Hi JohnG, this looks like a very interesting suspension you use under the plinth. Can you tell us something about?

I actually like it when a piece of equipment has a history of its own... That's why I ultimately decided against refinishing my SP10 (I would rate its cosmetic condition as 6 out of 10). I have seen (online) several SP10s with this external speed control, I wonder if it requires some modifications to the base unit.

I remember some guys at DIYaudio were running a group buy for stainless steel platters...

Hi Pavel,
I never opened this box, because the control worked without problems even when the fixed control was "spinning". It is connected with a cable to the main control.

Here is mine. Originally it was placed to lightweight plywood plinth. The theory was the turntable is heavy enough, no need heavy plinth like idlers need. Then I bought a slate plint from UK. Unfortunately the package was really weak, the result was received in 5 or 6 pieces. I was about to trash the remains, but then got advice from Karmadon (as far as I can remember) to try to glue it with epoxy. A tube of glue made it back alive. By the size it is not too big, and its really heavy. The plinth comes with SME cut. Again, Karmadon made the base secially for Mørch tonearm as it have pillar diameter smaller then SME. Must say the sound changes dramatically with new plinth. I think it is worth to invest some money in good heavy plinth.

Snap My understanding is that these SP-10´s with variable speed control are ex-BBC units. Mine has a sticker on the base with a service history. Will try for a picture when I´m next out in the listening room. I have seen (online) several SP10s with this external speed control, I wonder if it requires some modifications to the base unit. The turntable is modified and won´t run without the variable control attached.
