Brief Update: this one is intended for use with an SPU. The auxilary weight is missing, but I have that ordered now.

Meanwhile I set it up with a Coral MC-88E cartridge and I'm happy that I decided to choose this 40 years old tonearm over a contemporary one (as it sounds very good).

My 50 year old 3012/II will be up for sale soon.

Hi Ingemar,

so far I have not realy checked it for that. How can I tell if metal or nylon?

What I did is partial disassembly and rebuilding it correctly. (compare the tonearm in my pictures with a normal one)
Also ordered the missing parts so that I can use SPUs, that is why I bought it in the end.

Best regards, Tony

If you have the original outer box it will be marked at the end.   3012R 2203S is the code for metal version.
They were quite rare. Not too many made according to Brian Laker at SME

Hi Tony,

Just touch the knife with your finger, then you can feel if it´s metal or plastic.

I have never seen one with metal knives in real life.

Through the years I have had three 3012R:s, all off them with plastic knives.

I once got a price from SME for the metal knives, but it was too expensive for me at the time.

Enjoy your new arm Tony  grin

Hi Ingemar,

I guess mine is "plastic" too - never mind.

Hi Rockhopper,

"analogue tube audio" offers a high quality bronze version of the 3012R knife bearings.
This might be an option for me, somewhere in the future

Best regards,Tony

Having tried a bronze knife on a 3012 with an SPU i would choose steel, the bronze/brass deformed a bit after quite a short time.

If you cant find a new steel one get one used and polish it with a fine nail file until it feels smooth and a bit sharp, i might have used some fine glasspaper to finish

Considering to change my SME 3012R nylon bearing to steel bearing , I noticed the nylon bearing has a centre stub that hold it in place on the arm tube. However , the steel bearing do not have such stub & it’s merely hold in place thru the tiny screw threading thru the ground spade The back screw doesn’t seems to be able to lock tight . Advise appreciated

Very strange, since the holes in the armtube are supposed to have a thread. Can't figure out how that ground lug is supposed to be held in place if the armtube is threaded.

Holes in arm tube suppose to have a thread smileysmiley? Ground lug is suppose to be threaded by a tiny screw at the front of the bearing

You have a nice hole at the other end of the saddle which lines up with a (most likely threaded) hole in the armtube. If threaded, have you tried to find a screw that fits? Chances are it would be imperial, not metric.

edit:  it seems that the rear screw also holds the wayrod housing, at least in the version shown
