PTP6 on an aluminum/slate/aluminum sandwich with an Axia S cartridge on a VivLab arm.  A Roadrunner Tach & Eagle PSU working very well to manage the speed.  I've had it running for the past two weeks and am very happy with it.

Jim Campbell did a great job with the plinth and he also rebuilt the motor and bearing and fitten a new audio silente idler wheel.  The two tonearm slots ended up being un-necessary after I discovered the VivLab arm.

That is a big piece of slate. Where did it come from?

That's Pennsylvania slate.  The whole things weighs a little over 90 lbs.

Looks very smart - what are your listening impressions?

Very, very nice. I like the Vivlab arm too. Like Ian asked, what are your listening impressions and how is the arm in use. I like unusual uni-pivots.

That looks fantastic and I'm glad that you enjoy its sound.  Has the platter been painted or anodised ?  In the photos it doesn't look like the normal grey alloy.

I too use a slab of Pennsylvania slate with my PTP6, made by Jim Cambell. It’s the same slate that OMA uses. It’s internal geometry makes it tremendously effective at resonance control…(countdown to the return of ZM1080/Catsquirrel/Bryan in 10, 9, 8, …)

I think it’s a great choice, and tremendously beautiful. Lovely table!!

Very beautiful machine. The arm is also supposed to be very good. I would love to listen to it.

Congratulation on the build.  Did Jim also do the aluminum portion or was that done by you?

Jim built the entire composite plinth of slate with aluminum on top and below, bonded together with 3M elastomeric tape.  The platter was not treated at all other than with a routine cleaning.

My impressions of the 13" carbon fiber VivLab Rigid Float tonearm thus far: it's simple to set up and use, and it works.  Attaching the Transfiguration Axia to the headshell was straightforward; after a couple of record sides i felt the need to check the cartridge's position in the headshell and it really was simple to remove the headshell & make the necessary fine-tuning to the way the cartridge.  There is some tiny amount (hardly any really) of play in how the pair of cartridge bolts sit in their respective slots in the headshell.  Some may not like this, but for me I was grateful since this means there's less chance of mis-aligning the cartridge.  There's no anti-skating.  Setting tracking weight is easy.  Azimuth adjustment was not necessary this time but there is a screw that allows 5 degrees or so of adjustment.

I tried the HFN test record and passed everything except Band 9 on Side 1.  Resonant frequency was at around 9 Hz if I remember correctly.

So how does it sound so far?  Details come through with ease especially the highs like cymbals.  Bass is tight though still lacking; I'm certain this is going to keep improving as the cartridge breaks in.  Right now a new record is playing (Barney and Tete - Grenoble '88) and it sounds wonderful.  It's a performance that was recorded using a DAT so note that for whatever it's worth.  I'm just grateful it was recorded and made to vinyl for us to enjoy.  That the Roadrunner tach & Eagle PSU is running well surely helps to elevate the whole system's performance.  It's a pretty dynamic sound.  Very clear and clean sound.  It's sensitive to warped records, and I've had more than a couple of records that i did not know had slight warps until i played them on this setup.  I get a thumping noise once every revolution for a few seconds. The first time it happened i thought maybe the bearing was bad, but then realized it was due to a warped spot on the record.

All in all I'm pleased and convinced it's all a step in the right direction.

I don't have a mat so will be looking at the Clamps and Mats section to look for ideas.  The Spotmat seems to be among the favored ones so maybe I'll start with that.

Definitely check that section out, as there is a good amount of varied input from people. With my slate PTP6, i ended up with an SPH copper matt sitting on a Soundeck thin matt. Super black backgrounds, and i’m using headphones these days, so I’m hearing everything

Seconded! I use the same combo with my ptp5. Highly recommend.
