Progress and new lessons learned! Glued the top part of the lid. Used some tape to fix it and squeeze the last mm. Bad mistake, since the glue I'm using is applied benefitting from capillary force it continued to where I taped and thus creating more work with sanding and polishing. Used the router and a quickly made template to make a gap to lift the lid. Still more acrylic polishing left but at least it works and in the dark no one can see the scratches still there. Lets see if I can get some nice hinges or if I leave it like this. Fairly heavy.

Thanks! It's a steep learning curve doing everything for the first time. A square normal box style plinth would have been so much easier, including the lid, but I wanted to try and make something looking like a nice furniture.

Thanks! Since double or stacked platter looks a bit "ugly" with visible balancing holes I felt I needed to sort it out. Reading somewhere that damping could be a good think I thought I could do both at the same time. I have no idea if it's balanced or not. Maybe the light cork and leather is fairly uniform. How it looked. Also want it to look like one platter. First, one layer of cork. A bit thicker look. Last layer of leather. Tanned it with some wood stain, same as I used on the cuing arm.

Great build, you must be delighted, stacked platters never looked so good. A well detailed build thread, I've enjoyed following. AND you took on the plexi-glass cover challenge...KUDOS... best frothy

Thanks Marcus! About the plexi glass, you learn so much from trying! I wish I had ordered twice as much material in order to use what I learned on the second one!

I'm a bit curious about trying out a cartridge wood body!
Is it as good as people say?
I got some "hard wood" left overs from making the cueing platform.
Bocote, info from wood database:- Specific Gravity (Basic, 12% MC): .68, .85 - Janka Hardness: 2,010 lbf (8,950 N) - Modulus of Rupture: 16,590 lbf/in2 (114.4 MPa) - Elastic Modulus: 1,767,000 lbf/in2 (12.19 GPa) - Crushing Strength: 8,610 lbf/in2 (59.4 MPa)[/li]
Routing 8mm 2.5mm brass inserts Starting with my daily driver, a Shure M70 with a flimsy plastic body. Some say it's the same internals as M75 but with a cheaper body. It sounds good on my table anyway.
Great choice of veneer, looks fantastic.
That lid though looks great, that’s brave to take on, you made it fit so well, kudos.
I need a lid, I’m intending to pay someone to make it for me. This may be a dangerous thread in influencing me otherwise though.

Thanks! I'll guess that's the point of these threads, inspire and influence!

Cartridge body update! Carving and some basic finish. First impression is NOT good! Not sure what I got wrong. Sound is "dark" and a bit "murky". Sound like I lost a lot of the higher frequencies. Tried to see of there was something wrong with the setup and geometry but could not find anything obvious. I had to readjust the VTA a little. Any idea? Can a wood body really sink a cheap cart and be worse than the flimsy plastic body? Changed cart to a standard M75 with plastic mounting/body and the high's were back!

Can it be that the wooden body makes some pressure in some way on the stylus so it does not sit straight in the cartridge? Just guessing here though.... Hope you get it sound as good as it looks!

you need to check whether 1. cart with stylus fits tight into the body; 2. Adding extra mass may change a vertical force and pick up reaction to increased mass may cause a poor tracking ability on high passages.

If the geometry is correct, it can only be the total weight (effective mass) and the resonance behaviour. Yuri's wooden arm with the soft headshell may not be compatible with the additional weight and the existing needle compliance. Is the high tone gone or the low tone exaggerated? A measurement might help.
Best regards
Arndt
