Malcolm's work tweaking a Rega

https://www.lencoheaven.net/forum/index.php?topic=37382.0

stimulated my interest so I started hunting for a model to modify myself.  Searching on Ebay brought up this:

It's an ARB made by Andy Blakey it is based on a Rega but all that remains is the motor and sub-platter and even these might not last too long if I follow Malcolm's lead on upgrades.  grin

I asked Andy about the tonearm and he told me it was a generic Japanese one rewired with litz and using a carbon fibre arm tube.  It arrived this morning and didn't take long to put together.  It took longer hunting down some lubricant for the bearing which ended in failure so as yet I haven't been able to play anything but should be able to in the next day or two.  To me it looks ridiculously expensive which it wasn't and if you do a search for ARB turntables you'll find that no two look the same!

Put a REGA ADVANCED EBLT DRIVE BELT on your list as well.

Hi Ian

I've known Andy's work for a few years now and can vouch for his quality-AND value for money. By the way- a regular Rega belt will be waay  to short.
Here are a couple of photos of a deck I bought from him a few months back and a dual pivot arm which is really superb on my Analogue Alchemy deck:

I think you will be impressed!!

Best Wishes

You're both right regarding the standard belt being too short smiley  Very nice ARB Chris, as you say he does make some very interesting turntables at a very good price.

If the bearing is just brass like the original then I have some black oil which would work well, it works fine on LP12, Rega, Project, Mantra etc. Just not suitable for sinteretd bearings.

I can drop you a 5ml in the post if you want ?

That's very kind David.  I actually thought I had some black oil but can't find it.  I have some oil arriving today but most grateful for your offer.

I did but couldn't get rid of a hum - grounding issue.  Andy has agreed to take back the arm so hopefully I'll be fitting a Rega RB303 which will be arriving shortly.

Andy gave me a refund for the arm and sent me a mounting for the Rega which is actually an RB330.  I've ordered some spacers so hopefully I can get it up and running sometime soon.  Andy is clearly a good guy who was more than willing to sort out my problem smiley
