Hi folks.  My first post.  I took delivery on a PTP 12 last October.  I've been pretty happy with it but think I may want to try another cartridge.  Right now I'm using a Myajima Shilabe mounted on an ET 2.5 linear tracking turntable.  I bought the turntable largely for getting better PRAT out of my LP's vs my prior TT, which was belt drive via silk thread. I was pleasantly surprised that it was as resolving as my last TT (same tonearm), which I wasn't sure would be the case. The Shilabe does hum a little as it goes over the motor, so basically the last third of the LP.  It's not intrusive, but all things considered... Getting to the point,  I'm thinking about a Hana Umami and was wondering if anyone has any experience using it on a Lenco, especially in regards to picking up hum.

Hi “M” (names and locations are helpful here)

There are several metal mats under ‘traders’ here. One of which is if stainless. The added weight increases inertia and the stainless in non-magnetic. Maybe you could ask for a trial. Of course you will have to raise your arm to accommodate the new VTA.

Good luck!

Cheers!

I have a similar issue with  one of the Tone arms on my PTP5.  I use an resoEx brass mat ( non Magnetic) and that does not help. So it may be the case that a stainless or copper  mat may not be a solution.. The only cart I have that works  hum free is a grace F 14 mono. I really don't think a mono cart is a solution you would want.     These are the other carts I have tried SAEC XC10( a cart manufactured(long ago) by Excel sound who produces the Hana brand). Grace F9 ( stereo), and Ortofon OM super 40(all hummed as they approached the motor).   Obviously the carts I use are not in the same league as yours, but I am worried that you may need to discus with Peter a custom plinth that will position your arm better(with respect to the motor). I am solving the issue by building a new plinth with better placement of the offending arm.

There are at least two products that provide electromagnetic shielding, mumetal sheets, or the product I used, Y-shield
https://www.yshield.com/en/
For details see

It may be a cheaper solution than a new cartridge?

Hi Folks.  I'm still thinking about getting a Hana Red, but in the meantime I've mounted my Ortofon Cadenza Bronze to replace the Myajima Shilabe and there is virtually no hum.  I'm wondering if it may be partly because the Ortofon has a non-ferrous armeture.

Hi,

I would tray if possible just for hum test, to put a temporary stacked platter and see if increasing the distance of the cart from the motor improve things.

Its best to have any shielding as close to the hum source as  possible otherwise you allow the magnetic field to increase in size. Also ground the shield to the turntable mains earth not signal earth provided its insulated from any other metal that may be terminated at signal earth. As we know mu-metal is the best at shielding but any cut-outs does reduce its effectiveness slightly.

Looked at your photo again. Is the arm currently earthed to your amplifier earth post as the plinth appears to be non-metallic?  If so try disconnecting that and earth the arm via the mains plug if you have a three pin mains. Also check your cartridge pins for a good connection.  I know these arm tubes are easily swapped for multiple cartridge use, so check the connections through the arm and its connection to the horizontal tube just to rule out any possible faulty connection throughout the system.

I've been using a Hana EL on a Rega arm on my ptp5 Lenco and never had any issues with humming.

Thanks for the responses.  The Hana EL mentioned is similar to the Umami Red in terms of output .5 mv vs .4.  I'm thinking if the EL doesn't hum, then the Red shouldn't.
