Yes, I would have preferred something natural, but I am not aware of any natural resins with the right consistency that also harden well. Open for suggestions!

What about Urushi varnish, as use by Japanese cartridge makers?  https://www.sentomono.com/blog/what-is-urushi

I once searched for gun oil, to lubricate skateboard bearings.  Most of the hits were...not what I was looking for!  The same with leather trousers, for motorcycling.  I tend to prefer them with seats in.

Casein Paint is glue like and gives a good hard surface which even becomes water resistant in time.

I know casein as curd mixed with lime for wall painting in historical buildings. The silicate paint I used is quite similar. But I have to do a few more tests first anyway to find out what the problem was. then I can also try casein. Thanks for the idea!

I had tried schellac but it was too liquid... maybe I can get it to the right consistency with a filler... also worth a try.

My career was in the conservation of Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments wink Which is why I thought of casein and as you say it is usually mixed with slaked lime ( Calcium hydroxide ) to form a glue/paint. Cuttlefish bone is mainly made of Aragonite which is a natural form of calcium carbonate, therefore the casein lime mix will bond well with the aragonite and actually strengthen it.

Nice to meet someone with such knowledge! A friend of mine is a restorer and would have been my next port of call...
My suspicion is that the bone structure under the silicate paint layer was not pressure-resistant enough and the silicate paint itself was too soft. I could peel off parts like skin and underneath was dust from the collapsed bone structure. That's why the structure broke during sanding. Epoxy is hard enough. Do you think the casein structure is hard enough? Then the material would be perfect.

I think it is worth doing some tests with casein on a piece of cuttlefish bone.

Amazing thing Arndt  grin
Thinking about you comments on sealing the arm.
Malcolm's recommendation makes sense.
Also you can mix your own schelac and maybe get the viscosity you need .
I'll be watching for more.
Cheers

I had to think of the use of finely sieved Cuttlefishbone sanding dust in shellack... undecided
