I should make some more progress today and will post some new pics later. I think this needed a name and I've been pondering a few options. I've decided to name it "Khufu" after the Egyptian pharaoh famous for his pyramids. Seems a good choice considering the shape. Cheers

Friends and fellow Lenconians....steady but sure progress. Plinths have been prepared and the initial coat of finish applied. The timber has been hand planed then progressively sanded until it was ready for the oil. I started with 80 grit and worked down to 240 grit paper. The last bits were sanded by hand until I was happy with the finish. Steel wool was used for the finest sanding beginning with a coarse grade and finishing with 0000 grade fine wool. This approach (although time consuming) gives the perfect surface for any finish you choose Preparation is extremely important when working with a quality hardwood. I've rubbed in and lightly polished the surface with finishing oil. It's a combination of tung and other oils and doesn't leave a sticky or oily residue once it's sunk in and dried. It can be buffed to a very high shine. Next I'll mount/join the plinths then apply a thin coat of oil for the final finish. Should come up well. The two pieces on the side are ready to be turned on the lathe. They will be two of the legs for the tonearm plinth. more to come on that later.

My, my, my! Whatever amount of elbow grease you applied appears worth it. It has stature in spades!

Not got too much done today but managed to start the fun bit.....cutting acrylic. I still need to cut another platter then turn them and polish the edges. The tonearm plinth should start to take shape soon Marked up ready to cut Let the cutting begin All done I'll have a 20mm diameter centre on the platters to take a thick hardwood spindle. This will fit over the new spindle on one of Jeremy's bearing which is on order
