Oh by the way, I just found out they are selling some fake Jelco oil online: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEST-synthetic-oil-for-Jelco-or-any-tonearm-READ-THIS-/230546345998?pt=US_Record_Players_Home_Turntables&hash=item35ada2100eDon't buy this. Clearly the seller has no idea what he's selling. He suggests his oil can be used to lubricate bearings. Jelco bearings are never supposed to be lubricated. The only places where oil is supposed to be used is in the lifting mechanism (damping it) and in the oil well on top for the damping mechanism.

Hamish, if you roughly measure from the centre of the spindle to the centre of the ring on top of the tonearm shank this will point to your mounting distance. I would guess looking at it 205mm but some are 195, 205 or better 210mm 15mm is the overhang for sure. Lenco is 211mm. Mark
Arm length of the LAD/Jelco is 229mm overhang 13mm.

LAD (London Acoustical Developments) are a link to the original Garrard factory. They bought the entire stock of spare parts when it closed in Swindon. Terry O'Sullivan later bought all the relevant 301/401 parts that were in that consignment, hence the possibility of fitting original kit when it's needed for a Garrard service at Loricraft Audio. Incidentally, concerning John Peel who indeed used two of the larger chassis versions in his studio at Peel Acres. When you switch them on, they automatically default to 45rpm. Possibly the cause of so many of his records being played at the wrong speed. Here's mine. Sounds great, but I need to respray the tray. The plinth sits directly inside this, which enables it to be flush-mounted with the desk. You'll notice that the plinth is quite shiny, but the tray is matted and dull.

Brilliant video exploring The John Peel archive, loads of footage of the L.A.D decks (never seen them in white?) Stanton 500s too? What a record collection, and what attention to detail.

Interesting! Apparently the Eela Audio brand is still active today, operating from my home country: http://www.eela-audio.com/. They must have been selling rebadged LADs in their day. They don't seem to offer turntables anymore though. That Ebay seller has some funny ideas. "The Jelco tonearm is being sold for 400 to 700 euro's alone". That's hogwash. I bought mine NOS for $150 in 2010. Unless the drive mechanism of these TT's is golden, all this buyer is getting is the same tonearm used (quite possibly with worn bearings, as was the case with the first one I bought) for more than double the price. Not a good deal.

Now that IS a good deal . I do like the look of this TT. The blue color is similar to the blue color hammerite finish I applied to my Lenco top plate. Looking at the pictures, both the counterweight and headshell don't seem to be the original ones supplied with the tonearm. For the headshell, I wouldn't mind that much, as it always seemed to me a bit of a sad affair.. very light aluminum-ish material, but flexible and bendable so gets out of shape easily. Reminds me of cheap Chinese pot metal.

I had one of those, actualy two with one being EELA branded, and compared to a Technics SP15 and Victor DD-71. Meanwhile all four of them left.

Yes, EELA were the German market ones. What did you think of them?

Hi,
I have no clue about the price point for a new one back then, compared to for instance a sl1200mk2. But I would have expected to see far more of these in professional audio set-ups.
In terms of market penetration: Maybe they were introduced just too late - after the CD flooded the market - and they disappeared long before vinyl got "hot" again.
Actually I liked them, so I decided against ripping them appart.
Rgds, Tony
