So after finding some bargain 18mm MDF going for £1 in Homebase recently I decided to have a go at building a cabinet for my Fisher 500c Some of the glueing and using some hardwood beading to make a nicer front for the cabinet using the worlds worst mitre saw So the next stage is to source some walnut veneer to cover the MDF carcass and some brass grille stuff to prevent anyone touching the valves

Nice work David - I think B&Q has sheets of gold coloured aluminium mesh, I don't think it's particularly cheap though.

Fisher cabinets have been getting more expensive over the last 10 years, so this could be a fun and valuable project.

The one for my 800B was cut in the back by its prior owner so it could fit into someplace. I looked for another and only found one by buying a parts-unit 500C.

I take it you guys on the other side of the Atlantic are aware of this place for Fisher cabinets http://mcintoshcabinets.com/pages/fisher.htmThe prices aren't too bad it's just shipping them to the UK makes it an expensive option. Malcolm I went to B&Q and found a nice grille for £10 which was pretty much the same price as Ebay so I'm happy, all l need now is to make my mind up on some Walnut veneer. Has anyone used the veneer with the iron on backing, I have only ever just used the normal veneer & glued it to the base wood using PVA glue?

Just use a domestic iron on the 'hot' (cotton I think) setting using a cloth between iron and veneer

If you have enough C-clamps i believe a glued one will outlast any iron-on veneer.

But does the iron on stuff look really fake & plastic like cheap speakers and those horrible shelves in Homebase ?

No - it should be proper wood veneer.

I've no idea if your Fisher would fit or not but I found the plans to build mine here http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=447478Apparently 500c and 800 cabinets are the same size, but it might be worth checking on the site I listed in my previous post for the size of your model.

Well back from my holiday so cracked on with a bit more of the case The first side done with the iron on walnut veneer I bought from here http://www.iplacoustics.co.uk/cabinet_accessories.htmAnd some of the veneer rolled out before cutting Its coming along nicely but I'm a bit worried about how to get an invisible join when I have to do the top of the cabinet which will be the most viewed part, so anyone got any tips?

The way I used to do it was to fit one piece of veneer a bit proud of the edge then sand it off flush (only sand towards the glue joint) then fit the other piece, again make it proud of the edge (make this piece more so) then sand the at the point of the edge pressing towards the first piece - this will cut through the veneer and should produce a good joint - just take it slow and careful.
Does that make sense - it's much easier to demonstrate than explain.
